Technology Assessment
and Acquisition System for a top Biotechnology company.
Overview
Maintaining a
competitive edge in the drug discovery research disciplines
requires an efficient and effective process for locating,
evaluating and using the best technologies.
Discoverture
consultants have created solutions that allow researchers, sales
people, legal team, licensing group and other analysts to
collaborate on the assessment and acquisition of drug delivery
technologies, molecules, and laboratory automation equipment.
Opportunity
Summary
A large biotechnology
company found that is was spending a great deal of researchers’
time tracking down new drug delivery technologies to enhance their
existing product portfolio. Multiple researchers employed ad-hoc
processes to locate and assemble large volumes of physical and
electronic documentation. However, the interdependent nature of
these technologies and vendors often resulted in repeated and
inefficient explorations.
Solution
Our consultants worked
with the researchers to develop an intranet-based collaborative
application that assists in tracking, assessing and reporting on
emerging and developing drug delivery technologies. The system
manages all information, correspondence, messages, notes,
annotations, evaluations and other documentation on these
technologies and the companies that develop them. An additional
feature introduced by our consultants is the effective integration
of the application with the corporate e-mail system in order to
make it easier to capture and categorize e-mail texts and
attachments. The application was built as a scaleable J2EE
application with an Oracle database back end. The system also
integrates with the department’s document management system, the
corporate email system, and the enterprise LDAP Directory Server
for user authentication.
Benefits
As a result of the
system deployment and training, the researchers can now easily
collaborate in their research, avoiding a costly duplication of
effort. The system manages and shares all of the study data in a
consistent manner, streamlining the researchers’ work and
increasing group efficacy. The users now benefit from a simple
searching mechanism for all documents and related information. In
particular, the users really appreciate the email integration that
allows them to populate the research database without leaving
their email system or interrupting their daily routine.
